San Lorenzo del Escorial, 50km from Madrid, is one of the royal residences which owes its universal fame to the unique Monastery - built by king Felipe II - which deserved the title of "The Eight Wonder of the World". It was the center of universal power during the Golden Century of the Spanish Empire.
A few kilometres from El Escorial, in a wild valley at 4,000 feet above sea level, lies the monument of "El Valle de los Caidos" (the Valley of the Fallen) with its 500 feet-high granite cross and an impressive Basilica, mausoleum for the soldiers that fell victim to the civil war amid a wonderful scenery.
